My peerstudent, Hanna, invited Pascal and me to play to Kubb this afternoon.

Kubb is a game from Vikings, the word Kubb means “wooden  sticks” in the Gotland dialect (Gotland is an Swedish island of the Baltic See).

The goal of Kubb is to knock all the wooden blocks (~ the soldiers) of the adverse team with the help of sticks, then to knock the central wooden block (~ the King). Kubb can be simply described as a combination of bowling, horseshoes and chess.

A game is tour by tour. Each member of the team which has to play, has to throw the sticks on the square Kubbs, if a Kubb is hit by this way, the other team has to throw it on the adverse side and hit it the next turn. If this team doesn’t success, then the other one can go at the same place as the threw Kubb.

Once all the Kubbs of a team down, the other team has to hit the “King”, but by throwing the sticks between the legs.

Of course, it’s possible to add new rules to this game for more fun! To give an example, you can distract the other player with funny faces, funny words, use the non-usual hand to throw, dance around until to get confused before playing, etc..

In conclusion, it was a very nice warm & sunny afternoon, with a lot of fun, and little breaks to eat some cookies that Hanna made for us! :-)
